Arab Media in Baghdad: A New Beginning to Tackle Climate Change Challenges

VISION:- The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, is preparing to host the fourth edition of the Arab Media Conference, organized by the Union of Arab Radio Stations in collaboration with the Iraqi Media Network, from May 20 to 24, 2025, under the theme “The Role of Media in Facing Climate Change.”

This edition marks an important milestone as it is held for the first time outside the Union’s headquarters in Tunis, in recognition of Iraq’s vital role in supporting Arab media cooperation and the active efforts of the Iraqi Media Network.

The conference com5es at a time when environmental challenges are impacting food security, health, economy, and energy in the region. It emphasizes the need to place media at the heart of the climate battle through a simple and continuous media discourse capable of raising public awareness and motivating policymakers to adopt effective environmental policies.

The conference program is built around four main themes: understanding the causes and risks of climate change, assessing the reality of Arab media coverage on the issue, strengthening partnerships and cooperative climate media efforts, and the importance of specialized training.

Two specialized workshops will also precede the event, focusing on the “Early Warning for All” initiative and the use of artificial intelligence in climate media, reflecting the organizers’ awareness of the role of technology in advancing environmental media.

Experts from several Arab and foreign countries, as well as international organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union, the BBC Network, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UNESCO, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, will participate in the conference, enriching discussions with diverse perspectives and innovative solutions.

The conference aims to develop an Arab roadmap for sustainable environmental media through practical recommendations emerging from the sessions and will conclude with the “Baghdad Declaration,” which will serve as a reference to guide climate media discourse in the Arab world toward greater professionalism and effectiveness.

From Baghdad, a strong message is sent: Arab media are not mere conveyors of news but active partners in the fight against climate change, capable of building collective awareness and driving sustainable environmental policies in the region.
